How to get rid of dry skin on face

With these simple solutions you can easily prevent and relieve dry skin.

 CAUSES OF DRY SKIN

Apart from cold weather and dry air, there are other causes of flaky, itchy and dry skin:

  • Harsh ingredients in some skincare products, such as soaps, cleansers, toners and moisturisers that may dry the skin and upset its ph balance
  • Using retinols, peels and acids may temporarily dry and irritate the skin, causing redness, itchiness and peeling skin. Sometimes these symptoms may not go away, resulting in skin issues, such as breakouts or sensitivity that may be later difficult to address, especially when it comes to sensitive skin.
  • Washing in hot water will suck the moisture out of the skin
  • Excessive exfoliation may upset the skin’s natural moisture barrier and cause the hydration seep out more easily.
  • Prolonged sun exposure
  • Poor diet and not drinking enough water
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Get rid of dry skin on face and keep your skin ultra-hydrated with these easy solutions.

HYDRATE AND MOISTURISE

1. Hyaluronic acid

Use a hyaluronic acid product straight after cleansing in the morning and evening, before applying your moisturiser. Make sure to use a product that doesn’t contain harsh ingredients that may make the dry skin even worse. Hyaluronic acid products that I trust are:

2. Face oil

Our skin needs both water and oil. A high quality natural face oil such as Sana Naturals oil SERUM applied morning and evening as the last step in your skincare routine will lock the moisture in the skin, relieve dry skin, and help prevent it. You can apply it straight after the hyaluronic acid or over your regular moisturiser, ideally after misting your face with a floral water. This exquisite oil blend is suitable for skins of all ages and types, including both dry and oily skin that is prone to breakouts and acne, sensitive and damaged skin.

If your skin feels thirsty and tight during the day, you can mist your face with a floral water or a toner and apply a few drops of the oil SERUM over your make-up. It will immediately relieve dry skin and give it a fresh dewy look.

Avoid applying any face oil directly onto dry skin. Face oils use water particles to penetrate the skin and lock in the moisture so always apply a face oil on damp skin, i.e. straight after showering or spritzing your face with a toner or floral water.

EXFOLIATE

The cold weather and drier indoor air during colder months affect the skin’s natural renewal process which slows down and sheds less, often resulting in flaky dry skin.

Regular exfoliating helps remove dead skin cells and will help to reduce dry patches on the skin and improve its texture. When the skin is properly cleansed and exfoliated, your hydrating and moisturising skincare products can deeper penetrate the skin for best possible results.

Sana Naturals FACE WASH helps remove dirt and impurities and also gently exfoliates the skin to keep it smooth and glowing every day. The FACE WASH contains colloidal oats that work as an emollient by adding moisture to the skin. It keeps the skin soft and prevents it from feeling tight and itchy.

FACE WASH is suitable to use even on sensitive skin, is gentle enough to be used every day and is super helpful in preventing and getting rid of dry skin on the face.

It’s best to avoid face exfoliators that contain hard granules, especially if you have sensitive skin. They can cause a micro tears in the skin causing irritation and redness, and further aggravate the dry skin issue.

You can also use a damp muslin cloth to brush over the skin to exfoliate it without any product.

HYDRATION FROM THE INSIDE OUT

Healthy skin begins from the inside. Drinking enough of water (at least 2 litres per day) and having a balanced nutritious diet goes without saying in order to prevent dehydrated and dry skin and for the skin to maintain its glow.

Eat lots of hydrating fruits and vegetables that contain a high water content, as well as vitamins and minerals. Examples are cucumbers, carrots, oranges, kiwis, tomatoes, blueberries and apples. These foods help keep the body hydrated which in turn keeps the skin hydrated.

There are also some dietary supplements on the market, that are proven to have skin hydrating properties, such as hyaluronic acid, vitamin D, E and fish oil (its vegan counterpart is flaxseed oil).

I take fish oil and vitamin D supplements on a regular basis and their benefits go beyond healthy glowing skin. Incorporating a high quality oil in the diet that is rich in omega-3 helps maintain skin moisture and prevent skin dehydration when taken as part of a balanced diet. Great food sources of omega-3 are oily fish, such as mackerel, sardines, wild salmon, tuna and nuts and seeds, especially flaxseed.

I take hyaluronic acid only during periods when my skin feels really thirsty.

Food supplements have different properties, e.g. fish oil has blood thinning properties, so it’s important to consult a doctor before taking a supplement to make sure it’s suitable for you.

GO OUTSIDE

Get outside, even when it’s cold. When you’re constantly indoors, the lack of daylight and vitamin D as well as central heating will lead to dehydrated skin and a dull-looking complexion. Make sure to get out for a minimum of 20-30 minutes to keep dry skin away and see the difference in your skin. A brisk walk in the cold air will give you gorgeous, rosy looking cheeks which instantly perks up your complexion.

WHAT TO AVOID

1. Washing in hot water

Avoid using hot water when showering, bathing and washing your hands and hair and use lukewarm water instead. Hot water will suck the moisture out of your skin and hair and can strip them of their natural oils. Washing in a lower temperature will help to keep the hydration in and prevent dry skin.

2. Drying ingredients in skincare products

Have you ever thought that your cleanser or moisturiser may be causing your irritated and dry skin?

Many moisturisers, cleansers, toners and other skin care products contain drying and harsh ingredients that can make dry skin even worse. Read the labels and avoid products that contain alcohol, synthetic fragrances and colours, parabens, sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS), diethanolamine (DEA), monoethanolamine (MEA), or triethanolamine (TEA).
